Black Bulgar (Bulgaria inquinans)
Black Bulgar is a fungus in the family Phacidiaceae. It is commonly known by the names poor man's liquorice, and black jelly drops. It grows on branches and bark of dead trees including oak, and ash. You can find this fungus on several trees on the Barff and on some of the cut branches left on the woodland floor. The cap of Bulgaria inquinans is generally between 1cm – 4cm diameter and 1cm tall. It has a dark top with a brown outer surface when young, later becoming more cupped with the black top widening over much of the exterior surface. The texture of the mushroom feels like leather and is quite elastic, depending on dry weather (elastic like), or wet weather (leather). The species can be found over the colder winter months from October to March.
