Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus)
A large, edible fungus with a distinctive fan or oyster-shaped cap which is fan or oyster-shaped and broad. They can grow up to 25cm in length. The colour is often white or grey but sometimes tan coloured in places. It may be lobed or wavy. Their gills are white or cream in colour and vary in thickness depending on the age of the fungus. The stalk can be missing from specimens but is often off-centre and is short and thick. The oyster mushroom is quite common on the Barff and can be found on the hardwood trees, and particularly deciduous trees, such as Beech. Visible from October through to the end of February.
