A bird nearly always found scavaging around the waters edge. They are extremely timid birds and if disturbed will run for cover in to dense hedging or undergrowth. They have quite a distinctive red bill with a yellow tip and greeny yellow toes. They feed on seeds, roots, shoots and insects though they have been known to pinch eggs out of other ground nesting birds nests.
