Collared Doves
Today the collared dove is a regular visitor to most gardens and farms, infact the population has grown significantly during the 20th Century. They are relatively plain looking, with a pale grey, brown body, a very subtle pink bead and breast and a thin black collar on the back of its neck. They have dark eyes and a black bill. They originated from South East Europe though today they have spread to the entire continent. They make a small twig platform in a tree as a nest and lay two eggs, depending on the climate and weather they can have upto three broods a year. They feed on grain, seeds and are regular visitors to the garden bird feeders, either feeding directly from the feeder if their bulky body allows otherwise they scavenge off the floor under the feeders.. They have the very familiar coo, coo, coo sound which you often hear resinating down your chimney pot!
