Kingfisher
A beautiful and colourful looking bird, similar in size to the Starling. A striking blue colour with a vibrant orange breast. They fly like bullets along the waters edge until they come to rest on a branch or post just feet from the waters surface where they will sit and wait until an unsuspecting small fish, or damsel fly attracts their attention. Although quite widespread down south, up north their numbers are declining. They can be found by slow moving streams and rivers and lakes. They live in tree hollows and can also be found living in holes in the ground, where they make tunnels some stretching upto 8 metres in length. The female birds can lay upto 10 eggs and both parents help incubate the eggs, which hatch in around 3 to 4 weeks.
