Lapwings
A common visitor to the farmlands and waterbeds in North Yorkshire. The Lapwing looks predominantly black and white in colour but it has a significant greeninsh sheen to its back. They have a distinctive black cap which extends into a wispy crest. They are white underwing with a small red patch just under their tail.
Although they breed in small colonies, for most of the year they can be found in larger groups, socialising with Black headed gulls and Plovers. They nest in shallow grass lined hollows on the ground and have one brood per year consisting of between 3 - 4 eggs.
