White Cheeked Turaco
A beautiful richly coloured bird with a length of about 40 cm and weighing between 200 – 300g the Turaco is the similar size to a wood pigeon. The feathering is a steely blue and deep green colour. In flight it has bright red patches on its primary and secondary flight feathers. It has a orange bill and an orange eye ring with a small white patch in front of the eye with a longer white flash down its cheek.
The Turacos are native to Africa being found around Ethiopia and Eritrea. In the wild the birds eat a variety of fruits and plant material including juniper berries and podocarpus. They nest in trees, building a twiggy nest some 10 metres off the ground. They usually lay two eggs which they incubate for around 23 days, the chicks fledge in 25 days.
