One of my favourite small birds. They have a beautiful red face, with big yellow panels on their wings and can frequently be seen eating the seeds from tall thistles. Their numbers have increased significantly in recent years. They breed in areas with scatterings of small bushes and trees, and feeds in places such as roadside verges and industrial wasteland, so urban areas are ideal. Habitat diversity and winter feeding by gardeners have increased urban numbers.
