Red Deer
Always a big impressive animal to look at, the Red Deer is Britain’s largest land mammal. The Male stag is always larger than the female hind. The antlers are shed every February and reappear every spring, each year growing larger with the successive seasons. During the warmer summer months their coat becomes a reddish brown colour whereas during the winter months it turns greyer in colour. They live in separate sex herds and spend most of the day grazing or wallowing in mud. The Autumnal rut is accompanied by much roaring and bellowing from the male stags, ensuring their dominance over their female hinds.
