After the successful debut of ‘Ghosts In The Gardens’ in the Autumn of 2021, and again last Autumn 2022, once I heard the ghosts had returned in 2023 I had to go and try to find them in Museum Gardens York. The eerie 3D sculptures of historical figures are fashioned out of wire mesh, giving them an ethereal, now you see them now you don’t quality. Apparently, this year (2023) there are 39 of them to track down in all. They are situated around the centre of the city, from a highwayman and his horse to a spooky headmaster and his student to an angler fishing from the River Foss. They can be found in various locations around the city centre from the Museum Gardens, the Treasurer’s House, The Merchant Adventurers Hall, Middleton’s Hotel, The Artists Garden, Barley Hall and St Anthony’s Garden, to name just a few, there are 14 locations in all.
On todays visit I spent a good hour wandering around Museum Gardens looking for them. I would have spent longer had I not chosen one of the wettest days of the year to visit York!
I did pop round to have a look at the Treasurers house but unfortunately it is only open from Saturday – Wednesday. The next opportunity I have to revisit York I will take to see if I can find the remaining 30 ghosts! Here is hoping for better weather.
Ghosts In The Gardens is free, and runs from 23rd September until the 12th November 2023.
