Puffins
One of the most iconic birds of the Inner Farne Islands.
These colourful characters spend most of their lives out on the sea. Contrary to their profile, they are excellent and effective swimmers, using their wings as flippers and their feet as rudders.
They can dive upto a depth of around 60 metres and stay underwater for upto 30 seconds. They have a typical diet of sand eels and small herring. The Puffins large beak and mouth has backward facing teeth/spikes, which enable it to catch many small fish without swallowing them, holding them crossways on in their beak.
On returning to land and their nesting site with a haul of fish the Puffins have to run a pretty ruthless gauntlet of waiting Artic Terns and Gulls all eagerly waiting to ambush them for a quick, easy ready meal.
