The Yorkshire Air Museum
Situated on the Eastern outskirts of York, take the turn off the A1079 onto the B1228 along Elvington Lane and follow the brown Air Museum signs. The Yorkshire Air Museum is situated on the former World War 11 RAF Bomber Command Station in the small village of Elvington.
Today it is the largest independant Air Museum in the country. It is also the home of the Allied Air Forces Memorial. During the war it was the only base used by the French heavy bomber squadrons. For anyone interested in the war, airplanes or Military History then it is well worth a visit.
Having worked in the aircraft industry for all of my working life, firstly as an Aircraft Fitter and then as a Team Leader in the aircraft industry, many of the sights and smells of the old aircraft bring back rafts of memories for me. I actually finished my apprenticeship on the Buccaneer Aircraft and spent many years working on the Air Intakes, before moving onto the Phanthoms. It was during the mid 80's that I moved onto the Hawk aircraft and spent the rest of my time at Brough on that aircraft. It is great to see many of 'my' aircraft here in this museum.
