Scampston Wall Gardens
Situated in the village of Rillington stands Scampston Hall and Wall Gardens. 5 miles east of Malton on the A64.
The Scampston Estate was bought towards the end of the 17th Century by the St Quintin family and has remained in the family ever since. The first house was built around the 1700's although it was remodelled to a design by Thomas Leverton between 1795-1800.
The Walled Garden was originally constructed in the mid 18th Century. The current layout in the garden is quite recent and was designed by Piet Oudolf in 1999.
There is a 'Cascade Circuit Walk' which takes you from the ticket office, around the outside of the walled garden, around the front of the house, past the Parterre, through the rockery and over to the lake. The walk follows the path of the lake, over the cascade waterfall across the parkland and back to the walled garden. it is a very pleasant flat walk and takes about 30 minutes, with good views of the house, lakes and parkland.
After completing the Cascade walk there is a pleasant stroll through the Walled Garden. The Gardens have been divided into smaller themed gardens with a wide variety of planting offering the visitor plenty of colour and shape and plenty of unusual plants to look at. At the end of your walk around the garden there is a lovely restaurant where you can get a refreshing drink and bite to eat.
