African Elephants
The African Elephant is the world's largest land animals. The sight of them as they stroll through the savanah's sends shivers down my spine. They really are big beasts. Their tusks are massive, my guide was telling me that he has seen some African Elephants with tusks over 3 metres in length. Their huge trunk combines enormous strength yet at the same time can pick up a bunch of grass.
They are intensley social animals, the females and their siblings move around in very close knit clans and the youngsters will stay with their mother untill they are big enough to be able to fend for themselves. The herds can contain upto four generations of sisters, daughters, and granddaughters all looked after by the oldest female.
They have a life span of around 65 years. It is estimated that there are around 30,000 African Elephants in Kenya.
