A massive animal with a solid build and short legs, it has a cattle like appearance. The stout neck supports a large head with enormous horns which spread outwards and upwards from a thick broad base before arching up and inwards. Our first encounter with them was when they came to drink at the watering hole at Mountain Lodge and then wallow in the lake. They seem quite content to lay submerged for long periods in the mud, keeping cool. Although they have relatively poor eyesight it is more than made up by an acute sense of smell. They are responsible for many serious injuries and death among the logal people.
