Common Hippopotamus
Our first encounter with the Hippo was at Lake Naivasha. During the early evening, under the cover of darkness, they would amble up from the lake to the chalets and lodge to graze on the lush freshly watered grass which surrounded the buildings. They were completely oblivious to their surroundings and more concerned with feeding on this regular source of fresh food. Hippo's have quite a track record with humans and can cause serious injury and even death if they are startled. Our chalet was some 500 metres from the main part of the lodge so we had to run the gauntlet every evening accompanied with our guard in order to safely get to the restaurant, and back! A few days later we saw a large group of them submerged in a small lake in the Masai Mara.
