The largest terrestrial predator in Africa, the lion is the most sociable and least secretive of the world's 36 cat species. It is estimated that there are between 250 and 300 lion territories on the Masai Mara. This is one of the highest densities of lion in Africa.  Unfortunately during our brief stay in the Masai Mara we only had two distant sightings. The lion population in Africa since 1990 has seen a 75% decline in numbers. Let's hope on my next visit we have more luck spotting them.
