Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru Lodge
Situated in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru is a bird watchers paradise. It lies in in the heart of one of Kenya's most densly populated wetland national parks. (Ramsar Site) The water in Lake Nakuru is quite shallow and provides a rich source of algae. Due to the high levels of alkaline in the water the lake does not contain any fish. The lake is fed by three major rivers, the Makalia, Njoro and Enderit. As a result of the large amounts of algae there are estimated to be around 2 million Lesser Flamingo and Greater Flamingo, unfortunately during our brief stay at the lodge the Flamingo's had taken refuge on one of the adjoining lakes out of our range. Having said that we still managed to see plenty of bird life on the lake including- White Pelican, Yellow Billed Stork and Sacred Ibis.
The lodge was extremely comfortable, all onsuite facilities, excellent food. On the walk from our chalet to the main part of the lodge we would often watch Blue Starlings searching for food under the tree canopy, they have such beautiful striking colours. Animals spotted on our game drive included - Rothchild Girraffe, White and Black Rhino, Zebra, Cape Water Buffallo, Impala and Olive Baboons.
