Tioram Castle
The ruins of Castle Tioram stand on the tidal island of Eilean Tioram near the point at which the River Shiel flows into Loch Moidart. It is reached along a little over two miles of narrow and bumpy single track road which leaves the A861 at the north end of the bridge over the River Shiel, which is itself at the northern end of the village of Acharacle.
The minor road ends close to a car park in the woods just behind the shore, and from here it is a fairly short walk along the beach and across the sandbar causeway between the island and the mainland. Unfortunately the castle is in a poor state of repair due to falling masonry and brick work, the entrances to the ruins have been fenced off for your own safety.
Though hidden from the sea, the castle would have controled access to Loch Shiel and was the traditional seat of the Clam MacDonald. The castle was seized by Government forces around 1692 when the then Clan Chief Allan of Clanranaid joined the Jacobite Court in France, despite having sworn allegiance to the British Crown. A small garrison was stationed at the castle until the Jacobite uprising of 1715 when the Chief was recaptured, he decided to set the castle on fire to prevent it being handed over to the Government forces. The castle has been unoccupied since then, hence its current state of repair we see today.
The flat sandy beaches around the ruins are beautiful and deserted.
