Kilcamb Lodge Grounds
The private hotel grounds extend to over 22 acres which include woodland and meadows which extend down to Loch Sunart. The meadows look to have been have been carefully managed to enable ground nesting birds to breed there during the breeding season. The owners have cut some wide swathes around the grass to enable the hotel guests to walk around them and alongside the Loch without disturbing the birds.
Just outside the entrance to the hotel stands a beautiful Lime tree, by its size I presume it must be several hundred years old, the bench underneath the tree canopy is a lovely place to sit and watch the Swallows and Swifts swoop down collecting food and bugs as they soar through the air. It is just a short stroll to the water’s edge; I was amazed at the different variety of wildflowers which are flourishing in the undergrowth at the side of the loch. Most days I would sit at the side of the loch for several minutes and watch the Grey Herons as they stood motionless in the water searching for food in the shallow water and the Cormorants standing on some boulders wings outstretched as they dry themselves in the afternoon sunshine. Oystercatchers were always on the shoreline searching for rich pickings amongst the pebbles and seaweed, their bright orange beak probing into the sand for some morsels of food.
The views along the loch are breath-taking no matter what time of day, the light, mist, sunshine and rain all play their part in this ever changing landscape.
