Boat of Garten
In 2008 we headed up to the Boat of Garten a peaceful village set amongst heather clad hills and native woodlands in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. I spent a lot of time before I was married in the Cairngorms and on one visit I spent an enjoyable, sometimes terrifying, four days camping on ice and snow in Coire an t-Sneachda practising Ice climbing techniques with two of my climbing friends from the rescue team. Alas this visit was more relaxing and less stressful. We stayed in the ‘Boat Hotel’ in the Boat of Garten, a lovely hotel and definitely a hotel to stay in again. It made an ideal base, only a few miles drive to Avimore, very close to the Abernethy Nature reserve, next door to the Strathspey railway station and also the Boat of Garten Golf course and an ideal base for some great dog walking country. Needless to say that on this visit I only managed a dog walk into the entrance of Corie an t-Sneachda from the ski centre and how different it looked without the snow and ice cornices, although there were still pockets of snow in the more sheltered areas of the mountain. We did have some excellent days out to Balmoral, Ballindalloch Castle, Blair Castle to name just a few and some excellent sightings of the Osprey chicks in the Abernethy RSPB reserve.
