A little further up the road from Ashness Bridge is the ‘Surprise Viewpoint’. There is a small car park nearby and is worth stopping to admire the view. Be careful as head towards the view point though as there are no fences or safety barriers in place and a sheer drop. The view looks across the Borrowdale Valley with good view of Catbells opposite and Skidaw to the right at the head of the valley, weather permitting you should be able to see Bassenthwaite Lake too and looking left into the heart of the Jaws of Borrowdale with the Lodore Hotel below and to the left.
