Hope Park - Keswick
Situated in Keswick, close to the theatre and the shores of Derwent Water lies Hope Park, with its large outdoor games area and beautiful manicures gardens and café.
The park is set amongst some beautiful scenery with the mountain massif of Skiddaw as its backdrop. The park dates back to 1925 when the land was used for grazing the railway coach horses which brought tourists from the railway station to the town’s hotels. Sir Percy Hope owned the land and began developing it into a miniature golf course. It was opened on 27th May 1927. Since then, the park has become an important recreational area for both the residents of Keswick and the neighbouring towns and villages, as well as the increasing number of visitors the area welcomes each year. The ornamental garden was once the private garden of Lady Hope. It was the wish of Sir Percy and Lady Hope that the inhabitants of Keswick and visitors to the town would continue to enjoy these recreational facilities. After his death in 1974 the Hope Park Charitable Trust took over the running of the park in his memory and it continues to thrive and delight visitors to this day.
The Park also has a beautiful bench dedicated to an English Springer Spaniel called ‘Max. Max’s story is well documented, but he and his owner have raised many thousands of pounds for the Air Ambulance charity. The bench is probably one of the most photographed seats in the country and well worth a visit.
