One of the oldest water mill sites in the United States and still in use today. Dexter’s Grist Mill has ‘Plymouth Colony records’ dating back to 1640, in which Thomas Dexter was allocated 26 acres and 6 acres for his mill. Thomas lived in Lynn, Massachusetts and was the absent mill owner, it was his son Thomas the junior who was the miller. Since then the mill has had several uses but in 1961 the townsfolk of Sandwich bought the mill and restored it to its former glory.
