Devon 2024
This was my first visit to Devon, and probably not my last. Devon, also historically known as Devonshire, is a ceremonial county in Southwest England. It is bordered by the Bristol Channel to the north, Somerset and Dorset to the east, the English Channel to the south, and Cornwall to the west. The county town is Exeter, and the largest settlement is Plymouth on the south coast. Devon covers an area of 2,590 square miles (6,700 square kilometres) and has a population of approximately 1,194,166. Notable features include Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks, as well as the Jurassic Coast along the southeast coast. From our home in North Yorkshire it is a 323 mile journey, according to our Sat Nav it should take just over five hours and thirty minutes to reach our hotel on the Devon/ Cornwall border, in reality it took just over eight hours which included a forty five minute rest break at Gloucester Services, the remainder of the time taken up by roadworks, car accidents and the volume of traffic on the road.
