Limone sul Garda
Situated on the north western end of the lake lies the small town of Limone sul Garda. Prior to 1931 Limone was only reachable by boat. It survived on fishing, olive and citrus production; in fact Limone once boasted the most extensive lemon groves in the whole region, the lemons were grown in terraces above the lake. With the unification of Italy today the lemon groves have disappeared and Sicily has replaced Limone as the chief producer of Lemons.
Limone made the headlines in 1979 when Professor Cesare Sirtori of Milan discovered an unusual protein called the Apolipoproteib A1 Milano, this gene rids the arteries of fats and so virtually eliminates arteriosclerosis and heart disease. To date this gene has only been found among the residents of Limone. As a result the village has the highest concentration of over 80’s in the whole of Italy.
The lakeside promenade is lined with tourist souvenir shops, cafes and bars. The small old harbour is quant being surrounded by tall buildings. It was very pleasant to stroll along the narrow streets.
