Guadalest
Guadelest is a small town of just over 200 habitants situated inland from Altea and about 25 km inland from Benidorm. It is a popular tourist attraction and it is easy to see why. Guadalest is situated in the mountains and is surrounded by mountains it is very pretty, with stunning views down the valley to the sea, and over a turquoise reservoir below. The dam was built across the Guadalest River between 1953 and 1964. The dam is 73 metres high and 270 metres long and supplies water to many towns and villages in the area, including Benidorm.
The castle village is reached through a tunnel, with many little craft and souvenir shops lining the narrow streets. One of its most famous landmarks is the Peñon de La Alcalá tower rising high above the village to watch over the valley below. There are plenty of small cafeterias to get a drink or snack.
Guadalest used to be a Moorish town until the 17th Century, when all Moorish in Spain were forced to leave. The Moorish Fortress was destroyed just a few decades afterwards as a result of several earthquakes, but some parts still remain today.
