Polignano
Polignano is in the province of Bari, in the region of Apulia or Puglia. It is approximately 30 miles from Bari and 50 miles from Brindisi and has a population of less than 20,000 people but this is increased greatly at the weekends, holidays and especially August when tourists arrive. Built on steep limestone cliffs and caves overlooking the blue Waters of the Adriatic, like many other towns in Puglia, Polignano is a tangle of chalk white houses and narrow cobbled streets, worn smooth over the years. It has a historic centre that was once completely walled and moated on the land side. Polignano is famous throughout the world for four things; firstly cliff diving, in recent years the town has hosted the Red Bull Diving Championships attracting crowds of up to 50,000 spectators. Secondly is Polignano’s ice cream, third is the yellow brown Polignano carrot and fourth and possibly the most famous is that Domenico Modugno who was born in Polignano, wrote and sang the international song ‘ Volare’.
