Riverhill Himalayan Gardens
Although we have been coming to Kent for several years now, this is the first time I have visited Riverhill Himalayan Gardens. Our visit coincided with the Easter Holidays 2017. It is a little gem of a garden, situated in Sevenoaks. The origins of ‘Riverhill’ date back to the 1840 when John Rogers bought the house to develop his passion for rhododendrons. He became a classics scholar, a scientist and a friend of Charles Darwin. He was one of the first members of the Royal Horticultural Society and a patron of the plant collectors of the day.
Riverhill’s sheltered position provides an ideal lime free hillside where the rhododendrons, Azalias and shrubs can thrive. Over the years the collection has been added to by future generations of the family.
One of the nice parts of our visit was that we could take our two dogs around with us, there were lots of footpaths to explore, everything was well sign posted and there were some interesting information boards around the gardens. The Rose walk was lovely and well-tended, the walled garden very pleasant, in fact we had a great day, the grandchildren enjoyed the adventure play area too. To finish off we all enjoyed a very pleasant lunch in the café.
A great day and definitely worth another visit.
