Positano
Our first visit to Positano was back in 2005 and one of our tours along the Amalfi Coastline, a stunning stretch of coastline.
Positano is a picturesque seaside town which lies to the South of the Lattari Mountains. It is probably the most popular of all the seaside towns along this stretch of coast. The town has been built in a gorge which gradually widens out as it moves towards the sea. One of the many characteristics of the town are the tiny picturesque houses which look to be perched on top of each other. Many of these houses have been built onto the rock foundations.
The entire area is surrounded by green palms and citrus groves. The town climbs the hill in steps, with the oldest houses in the upper part of Positano, painted in either faded red or pink, decorated with Boroque Stucccoes. ‘Via Pasitea’ is the traffic free street leading down to the sea. It penetrates the heart of this small town with its narrow stepped alleys, houses with vaulted roofs, terraces and tiny gardens cling to the rock face.
Brightly coloured clothes and gifts that Positano is famous for are on display outside the shop fronts and they add more colour to the pastel coloured houses. Many of the local craftsmen are quite happy to make you a pair of sandals while you wait. The road to the beach ends at the Marina Grande, a pebble beach used by fishing boats and lined with bars and restaurants. It is a wonderful place and well worth a visit.
