Big boats and little boats
The Bay of Naples is an absolute mecca for the mariner. There are regular ferries out of the main port - the Marina Piccola to the outlying islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida as well as the mainland ports of Naples and Positano. On a weekend the locals bring their small craft and yachts out and wine and dine on them whilst they are anchored off the shoreline
Mediterranean Cruise liners visit the port most weeks, some magnificent vessels, five and six decks high, they drop anchor just outside the port and then ferry their passengers continuously throughout the day and early evening between the port and boat. They tend to stay for a couple of days then continue with their cruise around the Med.
Then there are the ‘Jet setter boats’ luxury, sleek, low profile craft, two to three decks high with a small number of crew, always in whites, looking after their special clientele.
Finally, every morning between 5.00am – 6.00am the fishermen leave the port in their small craft, usually manned by the skipper and two deckhands, they trawl their nets about two to three hundred yards off shore, for several hours before returning to the port and the waiting cars of the fish merchants, much of the fish is sold in the town.
