Basilica di Sant Antonino - Sorrento
Situated on the Piazza Sant’ Antonino is one of the largest churches in Sorrento. The Basilica honours the town’s patron saint, St Anthony Abbot.
The Basilica was built on the spot where the saint is believed to have been buried. Medieval in origin the church was completely modernised and decorated in full Baroque style when the administration of the church was taken over by the Theatines in 1608.
On the inside are valuable paintings by Giovanni Bernardo Lame and the representation of the siege of Sorrento in 1648. The oval shaped gold grill on the floor of the alter is a viewing area for the crypt underneath, to reach the crypt are two marble staircases either side of the alter and well worth a visit.
