Harewood House and Gardens
The house was built in 1759 and is the home of the Earl and Countess of Harewood. This beautiful Georgian house has remained in the Lascelles family since it was built.
It was designed by the Georgian architect John Carr with furnishings by Thomas Chippendale and the interiors by Robert Adam. The state rooms are beautiful.
There are some significant art collections including those by El Greco, JMW Turner and J Reynolds.
Outside there are over one hundred acres of grounds and gardens much remains unchanged since it was created by Capability Brown in the late 18th century. The 32 acre lake is set amongst the soft rolling parkland and mature established tree lines. The Himalayan Garden is a picture in the springtime as is the walled garden. The bird garden has over 30 birds from around the world including Chilean Flamingos and Humboldt Penguins.
The Courtyard café sells a nice selection of food and beverages throughout the day.
During 2017 the house was used to film some of the scenes from the ITV ‘Victoria’ series.
The house is situated in Harewood at the junction of the A61/A659 on the Leeds/Harrogate road. It is approximately 7 miles from Leeds and 5 miles from Wetherby.
