Palazzo Vecchio
Palazzo Vecchio to this day fulfils its role as Florence’s Town Hall. It was completed in 1322 when a huge bell which was used to call the locals to meetings or warn of fire, flood or enemy attack, was hauled to the top of the bell tower. The Palazzo has retained much of its medieval features although most of the interior was reshaped for Duke Cosimo 1 when he moved into the palace in 1540. Leonardo and Michelangelo were asked to redecorate the interior of the building, but it was finally carried out by Vasari. The craftsmanship that has gone into many of the pillars in the building is quite stunning.
